In this emotional tribute, we honour the life and legacy of Lenny Wilkens (Oct 28, 1937 – Nov 9, 2025). From his humble beginnings in Brooklyn’s Bedford–Stuyvesant neighbourhood, Lenny rose through the ranks of college basketball at Providence to become a nine-time NBA All-Star, and later a championship-winning coach with over 1,300 victories.
As a player, he averaged 16.5 points and 6.7 assists, ranking among the NBA’s all-time leaders in assists at his retirement. As a coach, he led the Seattle SuperSonics to their first and only title in 1979, and set the record for most games coached and wins in league history. He remains among an elite group inducted to the Naismith Hall of Fame as both player and coach.
But beyond the stats and trophies, Lenny’s true greatness lay in his mentorship, his quiet leadership, his commitment to team over self and to his community over fame. In the arenas of Seattle and beyond, streets and stadiums will carry his name long after his passing.
Join us as we explore his early life, playing career, coaching journey, family, and the caused-but-unreleased circumstances of his death. This tribute remembers not just a basketball icon, but a man of integrity, resilience and warmth.
